You can use place or, more often, seat to refer to somewhere where someone can sit. There was only one seat free on the train. More generally, you can refer to a space which someone or something can occupy. He was clearing a space for her to lie down. You do not use place as an uncount noun to refer to an open or empty area. You should use room or space instead. Room is more likely to be used when you are talking about space inside an enclosed area. There's not enough room in the bathroom for both of us… Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front.
指可以坐下的地方可用 place 或更常用的 seat:There was only one seat free on the train(火车上只有一个空座位)。space 则可更笼统地指人或物可以占据的空间:He was clearing a space for her to lie down(他正为她清出一处可以躺下的地方)。不应将 place 作为不可数名词来表示开阔的场地或空地,而应用 room 或 space。若指封闭区域内的空间,则更多地用 room:There's not enough room in the bathroom for both of us(卫生间里无法同时容纳下我们两个人),Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front(要和前面的车保持足够的距离)。
